A standard 7kW home EV charger installed in Leeds costs from £800 fully fitted, including DNO notification, cabling, and the certificate. Smart chargers with app control run £1,000 to £1,200. Here is what you actually need to know before you book.
Standard installs and prices
- 7kW tethered charger (standard install): £800. Suitable for most Leeds driveways with the consumer unit within 10 metres.
- 7kW smart charger with app and tariff integration: £1,050. Best if you use Octopus Go, Intelligent Octopus or similar off-peak tariffs.
- 22kW 3-phase (where supply allows): £1,500. Rare in domestic; requires 3-phase supply, which is uncommon in Leeds homes.
Do you need a smart charger?
If you plan to use a cheap off-peak tariff (Octopus Go at around 8.5p per kWh overnight, versus 27p on the standard rate), a smart charger pays for itself in 12 to 18 months. It schedules charging automatically for the cheap window.
What we handle for you
DNO notification
Every new EV charger must be notified to Northern Powergrid (the DNO for Leeds). We submit this for you at no extra cost. It usually takes 3 to 5 working days to be acknowledged, which is why we book installs a week or two ahead.
Load management
Most homes in Leeds have an 80A or 100A main fuse. A 7kW charger draws 32A. If you also have an electric shower, hob and oven, the total load can exceed your main fuse rating. Smart chargers manage this automatically, throttling down when other loads are high. This is why the smart upgrade is more than just an app.
What is included in the install
- Site survey (usually done at the same visit)
- Cabling from your consumer unit to the charger location (up to 10 metres)
- Type A RCBO or Type B RCD protection in the consumer unit
- Charger unit mounted, tested and commissioned
- DNO notification to Northern Powergrid
- Part P notification to Leeds City Council
- Electrical Installation Certificate
OZEV grant: still available?
The old EVHS grant closed for standard homeowners in April 2022. It is still available for flats and rented properties (up to £350 towards install). Most Leeds homeowners no longer qualify. We will tell you straight if you do.
Recommended brands
We fit Ohme, Hypervolt, Easee, Wallbox and Zappi. Ohme is our default recommendation for most Leeds installs: fair price, tariff-native app, 3-year warranty. Zappi is worth the extra if you have solar panels and want to charge off surplus.
